ifp spirit awards

Well, I just voted in the IFP Spirit Awards. I'm not sure who's going to win, but here's my picks.

Best Feature - Sideways
Best Director - Alexander Payne for Sideways
Best First Feature - Garden State
John Cassavetes Award - Mean Creek
Best Screenplay - Sideways
Best First Screenplay - Garden State
Best Female Lead - Catalina Sandino Moreno for Maria Full of Grace
Best Male Lead - Paul Giamatti for Sideways
Best Supporting Female - Virginia Madsen for Sideways
Best Supporting Male - Thomas Haden Church for Sideways
Best Debut Performance - David Sullivan for Primer
Best Cinematography - Maryse Alberti for We Don't Live Here Anymore
Best Foreign Film - The Sea Inside
Best Documentary - Tarnation (I didn't see it. The only one in this category I saw was Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster which was great. But I heard that Tarnation is amazing. I voted for Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.)

Watch the IFP Spirit Awards Live at 5p ET/ 2p PT on IFC LIVE Feb. 26th! Or the rebroadcast on Bravo at 10pm ET/PT.

Also, two movies that I highly recommend after viewing for the Spirit Awards are:

Maria Full of Grace & Mean Creek. These movies I hadn't heard of until I was screening them for the awards process. Both of them just blew me away. So go out and rent them. They are both available on DVD now.

see this movie

If you haven't already, you need to see the movie Mean Creek. I saw this movie the other day and it just grabs you. It's a bit disturbing, but it's got a fantastic young cast and was made for under $500,000. It's about a group of youngsters who decide to teach a bully a lesson and end up deciding what to do about a really bad situation. I don't want to say much else, since I think it's really worth watching. I think it's available on DVD now. Check your local video store or just rent from Netflix man. Later.

oscar nominations

Oscar Nominations announced today.

I thought there were some surprises. I thought that Paul Giammatti would get nominated for "Sideways". He didn't. "The Aviator" got a lot more nominations than I expected too. I still haven't seen that movie. I haven't put out any new no clue reviews either in a while. UGH! I was glad to see Jamie Foxx get nominated. Both for "Ray" (where he was amazing) and for "Collateral" (excellent). I was also disappointed that "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" didn't get a Best picture nod. It did receive some other noms though, Best Actress Kate Winslet and Best Original Screenplay.

All in all, it was a pretty good movie year and there were some well deserved nominations. Of course, there are more folks who deserve it too, but they can't all be nominated I guess. Lead actress nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno for "Maria Full Of Grace" must have been surprised. But she was excellent in the film. Too bad that Uma Thurman didn't get a nom for "Kill Bill Vol. 2".

Oh well, I'll be watching and have some predictions up in a few weeks. Anyway, check out the full list of nominees and get ready for Oscar Night on Feb. 27.

new year, new blog

I decided to convert the no clue news portion of the site into an easier to update blog. I hope you like it. For those that are interested, I'm using blogger.com. It's very easy and has a nice interface. I'll dump the old news into one post soon. The best part about doing the news this way is that you can easily post comments and search for items.

I will get back to doing some updates soon. Until then, here's 3 movies you should consider renting:

Maria Full of Grace - very very excellent movie.

Hitman's Code - directed by my friend David Craig and shot on HD 24 p. Formerly titled "The Face of the Serpent".

The Falls - directed by Paul DeNigris and shot on mini DV. It looks great. Filmed in Buffalo, NY.

Talk to you soon.
